Work/uni getting you down? In dire need of a mini-break but cash is tight? What if we told you that there’s a party happening in Amsterdam and you’re invited…

King’s Day (Koningsdag) is a national holiday celebrating King Willem-Alexander that sees people across the country taking to the streets to sing, dance and make merry. Why Amsterdam? The capital is full of life every day but even more so on 27 April, and to make the deal even sweeter, booking flights in advance can work out fairly cheaply.

With events taking place all over, the best way to enjoy yourself is to be flexible and see where the day takes you. There’s no need to fork out for expensive clubs or overpriced booze as most people head to the canals to celebrate, where speakers blaring out of windows provide the soundtrack.

Pressed’s top advice is to make sure you pace yourself – festivities start early and go on long into the night so you don’t want to miss anything by getting cocky and thinking you can handle a bottle of vodka before noon. Be sure to dress for the occasion – orange is necessary and face-paint is encouraged. Don’t do anything we wouldn’t do.

King's Day takes over the Netherlands each spring, do it properly with Pressed
