With 4 April's Ching Ming Festival approaching it's hard to think of a better time to go to Hong Kong, one of the world's most famous urban jungles. But ranked in 2016 by consulting firm Mercer as the 2016 world’s most expensive city for expats, a cheap getaway it most certainly is not. Here are some rock-bottom budget suggestions:

Instead of paying between HK$40-$60 (£4-£6) for a pint in a bar, grab a few beers at your local 7-11 for a quarter of the price and head to the rooftop garden of the IFC building in Central. With public sofas, tables and a stunning view of the Kowloon skyline, it's a secluded spot perfect for the penniless traveller.

Stay at Chungking Mansions in Hong Kong's Tsim Sha Tsui district. This dodgy 17-storey concrete maze of twisting stairwells, crammed shops and budget guesthouses is a legendary backpacker haunt. While not for the faint-hearted, tiny rooms not much bigger than the beds themselves are available here for as little as HK$180 (£15) a night.

With small street-food stalls on every corner, the streets of Hong Kong's Mongkok district are the perfect place to grab a bargain bite. At only HKD$10 (£1) each, skewers of local delicacies ranging from tofu to deep-fried intestines are the economical answer to an empty stomach.
